Data Protection

Data Protection Act 1998

Information held on pupils and its disclosure to "third parties"

Information on pupils is processed by a number of organisations including schools and Local Authorities in order to run the education and social care systems. In processing information, all these organisations have to comply with the Data Protection Act 1998. This means, among other things, that the data held about pupils, must only be used for specific purposes allowed by law.

To meet the requirements imposed by the Data Protection Act, schools must issue a "Fair Processing Notice" to parents/carers. There are Fair Processing Notices displayed on the school website which will differ slightly for primary and secondary pupils. The notice sets out what information is held about pupils, why it is held, and to whom it may be passed on.
